Toll-free numbers allow customers to contact a business without paying for the call. Toll-free numbers operate differently depending on the carrier and the country, as well as the type of toll-free number used.
Inbound calling:
- Toll-free numbers are free to call from the country of origin. For example, a US toll-free number is free to call if the caller is also in the US using a US phone plan.
- Toll-free numbers may not be callable outside their country of origin. This depends on the toll-free provider, the country where the number originated, and the location of the caller.
- Where toll-free numbers are callable outside their country of origin, additional charges may apply to the caller.
Outbound calling from toll-free numbers:
Talkdesk fully supports outbound calling from toll-free numbers. However, we recommend using a non-toll-free number for outbound dialing whenever possible.
- Carriers treat toll-free numbers primarily as an inbound service from a regulatory standpoint.
- This can result in inconsistent call delivery, lower answer rates, or unexpected call blocking or filtering on the receiving end.
- Using a standard local or national number for outbound dialing reduces these risks and provides more predictable calling behavior over time.
