Summary
The UK telecom regulator is introducing new Know Your Customer (KYC) compliance rules for UK long numbers. This change is designed to minimize and help prevent fraudulent and nuisance calls using these numbers.
Whilst the changes do not come into effect immediately, we want to provide our customers time to collate and submit the required information to ensure their services are not affected.
Customers who fail to fulfill the KYC requirements in the required timeframes will be unable to buy new UK long numbers and will have their numbers blocked from sending or receiving any voice calls or messaging. It is therefore essential that our customers comply with this new KYC requirement promptly.
What is changing and why
The UK telecoms regulator has increased the requirements relating to KYC compliance. The changes are to protect consumers and the public from fraudulent or nuisance calls and require the owners of the numbers to provide additional information relating to the intended use of the UK numbers that they own.
Specifically, the new KYC requirements target UK long codes. That is, any 10 or 11-digit UK number, regardless of its type. Owners of these numbers must provide:
- Company name, Registration Authority, Registration number (CRN), and business website;
- Registered and emergency address (require UK address for Local and National long codes);
- Authorized representative’s full name, work email, and phone number;
- Business Identity;
- Traffic type;
- Use case;
- Communication destination;
- Proof of Business Identity* (excerpt from the commercial register)
*This is required only for businesses not using a UK Companies House Registration Number
Notable impact on customers
Customers who fail to fulfill the KYC requirements in the required timeframes will be unable to buy new UK long numbers and will have their numbers blocked from sending or receiving any voice calls or messaging.
